Abstract:

The Judy Wells papers contain materials related to her teaching and writing, and to her work as a graduate student and participant in the Women's Studies Movement at the University of California, Berkeley. The collection includes files related to "Berkeley Literary Women's Revolution: Essays from Marsha's Salon," including documentation on the Women's Studies and the Comparative Literature Women's Caucus at UC Berkeley; teaching files, including materials related to Wells' literature course on women and madness; research files; women's health publications and ephemera; key women's (and men's) liberation ephemera and publications; and files related to Well's Ph.D., including her dissertation proposal on androgyny as a literary theme, and research for and drafts of the thesis she completed on anger and insanity in modern women's literature. There is also some personalia and photographs. Wells provided detailed and annotated container lists. These are in the first folder of each carton. Please note that a few files were moved from Carton 1 to Carton 2 because of space issues.

Judith (Judy) L. Wells is a San Francisco Bay Area poet, writer, and teacher. She received her B.A. in French from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley, where she wrote her dissertation, "Madness and women: a study of the themes of insanity and anger in modern literature by women." Wells is co-editor of "The Berkeley Literary Women's Revolution: Essays from Marsha's Salon," a chronicle of the founding of Women's Studies Caucus in the Department of Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley in the 1970s. She taught at various Bay Area colleges, including St. Mary's College of California, where she was also an academic counselor.
